Myrtle Beach History
Myrtle Beach was incorporated as a town in 1938 then became a city in 1957. The Word Myrtle Beach came from the wife of F.G. Burroughs and derived from the shrub wax myrtle that grows abundantly in the Grand Strand. Myrtle Beach and the surrounding areas are known as the Grand Strand for South Carolina. The Grand Strand was created by Claude Dunnagan in his newspaper Column December 3, 1949. The term was used to include an entire string of communities from the north fishing villages of Little River all the way south to historic Georgetown. It consists of 60 miles of beautiful Atlantic Beach Coastline full of white sandy beaches and the famous Intra-coastal Waterway and has more than 25,000 permanent residents. It has been noted that the Grand Strand is the most sought after drive-to beach in the Country. Thanks to the Oceanfront renourishment project a few years back, the Grand Strand beach is considered to have one of the widest in the world (which is at 100 yards during low tide). In 1905, Myrtle Beach Oceanfront Lots were going for $ 25.00 and if you were to build a structure costing at least $ 500.00, you would get a 2nd lot for free. In today’s market, Myrtle Beach Real Estate will range from below $100,000.00 to more that $ 1 Million for beachfront, ocean view, intra-coastal, riverfront/marsh-view homes, town homes and condominiums.
